Steel milling machines fabricate contoured surfaces, produce irregular shapes and can be used to drill, bore and cut gears to name a few, making them a vital manufacturing tool in various industries such as automotive, agricultural and aerospace. For better precision and repeatability, LSG Machine Tools has a wide selection of machines suitable for milling different types of metals.

Most Common Types of Steel Milling Machines

There are multiple steel milling machines and LSG Machine Tools would like to highlight a few of the most commonly used ones for steel fabrication.

  1. Vertical
With a spindle head fixed on a vertical column, this steel milling machine rotates at an angle to produce precision cut slots and grooves as well as accurately index and machine holes.  The workpiece is securely placed on the table with the position of the spindle perpendicular or vertical to the table. Easy to operate, the structural rigidity of a vertical milling machine enables operators to work on angular surfaces with steel, cast iron or other light metal pieces.
  1. Horizontal or plain
Featuring different cutting tools to the vertical machines, the horizontally placed spindles can selectively remove steel from the workpiece. The spindle contains rotating cutting tools that press against the material horizontally to the table making them extremely versatile. Horizontal steel milling machines are highly recommended for projects where work is needed on more than one side and for large projects requiring heavier materials.
  1. Universal
With the ability to perform a wide range of operations, the table of universal steel milling machines can pivot at varying angles, up to 45 degrees on both sides ideal for helical milling. The versatility afforded by a table that is fitted with different motions and dividing heads that can change gears provides a more comprehensive range of motion. Additional attachments such as vertical milling, rotary and slotting allow for complex shaping and creating spiral bevel gears, twist drills and spurs to name a few.

LSG Machine Tools has the perfect cutting tools for simple or highly complex steel fabrication. Contact us and we will recommend the right type of milling machine and tools for your project
