What is a Plate Roller Machine and How Does it Work?
Plate roller machines are required for bending varying thicknesses of sheet metal into round, conical and sometimes, square shapes. They are differentiated by the number of rollers, the drive (which can be hydraulic or mechanical) and the thicknesses as well as patterns that can be formed.
The number of rollers used is dependent on the thickness of the sheet metal and product versatility. A plate roller machine relies on the amount of pressure exerted on the sheet metal by the top and lower hardened rollers. With the sheet metal positioned between the rollers, the rotating action of the rollers pushes the sheet metal through creating the desired curvature.
- A two-roll plate roller machine is ideal for basic shaping on sheet metal less than 3mm thick and 1800mm wide. The speed of these machines makes them ideal for mass production
- Three-plate rollers afford more versatility as the operator has more control. The third roller is used to deform the sheet metal whilst the other rollers hold it
- Rectangular and square shapes are produced by four plate rolling machines which can handle thicknesses of up to 200mm
