Power saws are engineered to cut and shape various materials, including lumber, metal, and ceramics using electric- or battery-powered motors with a dedicated serrated blade to achieve the desired outcome. Whether stationary or portable, the efficacy of power saws cannot be disputed. In this article, the professionals at LSG Machine Tools would like to share some essential safety tips to follow when using these handy tools in your workshop.

Mastering the Power of Power Saws

Injuries from power saws can range from minor to serious, but they can be prevented if the necessary safety precautions are followed when operating one:

  • Always consult the operating manual before using your power saw for safe operation. Never disable or tamper with the safety guards.
  • Consider operator safety. Blades should always be kept sharp to prevent binding, stalling, and kickback incidents.
  • For a clean and controlled cut, allow the blade to achieve full speed before engaging.
  • The workpiece must be firmly supported to prevent it from shifting.
  • Use a blade specifically sized for the material being cut. Additionally, adjust the cutting depth to minimise the amount of blade exposure. This optimises cutting performances while preventing potential hazards.
  • During startup and shutdown of power saws, ensure that the workpiece is not in contact with the blade.
  • If you are using a table saw, the blade must be lowered below the tabletop when you have completed the cut.
  • Avoid clearing debris away from the saw table with your hands for optimal safety. Instead, use a push stick to remove any scrap material safely.
  • Never allow yourself to be distracted while working with a power saw. Keep your eyes on your workpiece at all times.

From safe operating tips to wearing the appropriate PPE clothing, such as safety goggles, we suggest you also refrain from wearing any loose clothing or jewellery as they may get caught up in the blade when cutting or shaping a workpiece with a power saw.
