When it comes to moulding, forging and generally configuring a range of materials, hydraulic presses have proven their efficacy over a wide range of industry applications. LSG Machine Tools outlines the working principle behind this versatile piece of equipment as well as their multiple uses in manufacturing.

How Do Hydraulic Presses Operate?

Understanding the working principle of hydraulic presses incorporates the many functions that these machines can perform. They are used to assemble, bend, crush or alter the shapes of several materials by applying the physical properties of hydraulic fluid to exert the required pressure. The pressure is transmitted to a cylindrical piston which drives the fluid into a larger piston and back to the smaller one. The continuous motion of the pistons applies varying degrees of mechanical pressure which is measured in tonnes.

Industries that Benefit from Hydraulic Presses

With relatively few moving parts, this equipment is easy to maintain, takes up less space than other mechanical alternatives and can create intricate shapes without wasting too much material. Some of the areas and industries that benefit from these machines are:

  • Compression testing – The tensile strength of concrete materials is often tested using hydraulic presses.
  • Metal industries – Scrap yards and vehicle parts manufacturers benefit greatly from these machines’ various tonne capacities to crush mild steel and for the production of a plethora of moving parts such as windscreen wipers
  • Ceramics – The versatility of this equipment offers the ceramic industry an alternative to high-temperature kiln manufacturing methods enabling them to create a wide range of ceramic products.
  • Powder products – Powder compacting relies on presses to compress powders into layered shapes and designs for distribution.

Contrary to popular belief, hydraulic presses aren’t limited to large-scale industry operations. Many mechanics, marine operations and wood producers, to name a few, rely on them daily. In fact, you would be hard-pressed to not find a C- or H-frame press where manufacturing takes place.
