Milling machines are used for several applications, from drilling and boring to cutting gears, threads and slots, to name a few. The type of milling machine selected is entirely dependent on the intended use. LSG Machine Tools has compiled a list of the different types of milling machines available, making your decision on which type to buy a little simpler.
- Horizontal
Horizontal machines come with the spindle positioned horizontally with the working table. The freedom of movement offered has made this machinery the most commonly used affording operators the ability to use a variety of materials to cut gears and faces, to name a few. The workpiece can be fed through in multiple ways by adjusting the direction of the work table.
- Vertical
Creating slots, grooves and flat surfaces in working pieces is best done with vertical machines. Normally these machines are manually controlled. However, some manufacturers include computer numeric control (CNC). The vertically aligned spindle moves up and down and machining operations can be done on metal, wood and certain plastics.
- Universal
These machines can be considered the advanced version of the horizontal machine providing the same basic functionality but with the added benefit of a 45-degree swing on both axes. Not only can universal machinery perform almost all milling operations, but their shaping capabilities also eliminate the need for shaping machinery.
- Digital Readout Systems (DRO)
DRO machines are special-purpose systems designed for grinding and milling processes. They come with a numeric digital display that is mounted on milling machines to provide DRO for both the X and Y-axes of the mill and the Z-axis position of the cutting tool.
These are the most popular types of milling machines used. Should you need further functional capabilities offered by birdgeport type, turret or other milling machines, LSG Machine Tools will gladly assist you.
